iTunes Compilations

So while adding a bunch of trance compilations, I didn’t want the extra 3000 new artists showing up in my library with only one song. So after some messing around, I found a way to fix it! Basically highlight the whole album, right click, Get Info, then under options make sure you select Yes for compilation. And in your iTunes settings, click group compilations in the advanced tab.

Also worth mentioning- I found a sweet ass media player, Songbird. I would definitely use it, but it doesn’t have compilation capabilities, so I’ll be holding off on it for a little while.

Lesson Learned

So my Hackintosh install went really well. I had it working decently. But I had to go mess it up.

So I installed Snow Leopard on my second hard drive. It was working like a charm. But the only way to boot into is through something called a boot loader. Basically you can’t boot straight into it like you can with Windows. So I was able to have both my W7 installation and the SL running, but it was booting into SL by default, which I do not want. So I’ve been reading about something called “EasyBCD.” I suppose it would work, if I had known WTF I was doing.

So, I had tried to install another boot loader, this time from Windows. The one from OS X works like a charm, I just couldn’t get it to boot into the Windows HD. So I tried the EasyBCD one. And I ended up deleting my fucking Widows boot loader. Scratch that, EasyBCD replaced it with the Vista boot loader. So now I wasn’t able to repair my W7 installation with the CD, because it thought Vista was installed.

So to change the default drive on the SL, I had to edit a text file. It was telling me that the file was locked when I was trying to edit the file. So I had figured it was a system file or something. But I decided to try another text editor. I found some random one online, and when I pressed Save this time, “Would you like to unlock the file?” WTF. So I had just lost my W7 installation (and all the files on that HD because I had to reformat) and I wasted about a good four hours trying to get everything to work. All I had to do was add two lines to a file, with a different text editor, woo.

If none of this made sense to you, hope it never does.

Hackintosh

I found out about installing OS X via this lifehacker article. It kind of intimidated me, so I wanted to do it. As it turns out, my motherboard I have is almost identical to the one used in the tutorials. So I didn’t have to do any serious modifications to the KEXT files. Which are essentially driver files for the OS X operating system. So it was actually a pretty straight forward process. The hardest part was convincing someone to let me borrow their 8gb flash drive, and someone else to let me use their MAC (to format the flash drive properly). After that, it’s point and click.

I actually had done this about a week and a half ago, but ran into some issues dual-booting OS X and Windows 7 (which I use as my main OS). I really wanted to try OS X so on impulse, I decided to delete my Windows installation. What the heck, it was only the release candidate!

So anyways I played around with SL for a few days, and it was fun. But the lack of drivers (mainly for my Logitech mouse & keyboard, and X-Fi sound card) started to get on my nerves, and I wanted to play Aion. Well… I wanted to have the CHANCE to play it. School is a bitch.

So anyways, I switched back to Windows 7, and ordered myself another hard drive. It’s now in dual booting action.

So while I’ve been typing this, the install actually finished. Screenshots & more info coming.

So I’ve now switched to the Hackintosh. It’s nice using the SL operating system, I just have a few issues with it.

Driver issues mentioned above (main thing is that my back button won’t work on my mouse & my sound card)
SL doesn’t play nice with my (Windows formatted) external HD, thus I can’t work with my iTunes library in OS X.
Mouse smoothing sucks. It’s different on Macs, I think it’s a ploy by Apple to make the OS feel smoother! There are ways to turn it off, but it doesn’t really do the job well.

Next step: Trual booting with Ubuntu 9.10!

So Windows Update never found the correct drivers. However downloading Windows XP x64 drivers worked like a charm! It is an improvement I have to say though- Windows has never found a networked printer in the Add Printer dialog for me before.

Facebook Lite

I discovered Facebook Lite from another site one day. It’s basically seems like Facebook, but without all the AJAX and other scripts running. Probably for mobile browsers or if you are just tired of the bloated FB. Clicking on the picture or on this link will take you there .

Windows 7

Is awesome. I know it’s the hype and all right now, but I think it really does deserve it. Here are some of my favorite new features.

Desktop – My setup is pretty stock right now but it’s simple, but I have everything I need right there. Nothing really new here from Vista. You can still have Gadgets and such. I prefer mine to be simple and clean.

Taskbar – Pretty much speaks for itself. It’s extremely easy to use and efficient.

One of the great features, is when you have it expanded to show the text (not the default setting), it will condense applications when you clutter it up. And you can close the windows by middle clicking on the thumbnail previews that pop up. Quick tip: middle clicking an icon will open another instance of it. For instance if you have my documents open, and you middle click that icon- you will open another instance of explorer. I also love the new notification icons. You can display and hide whichever ones you please. All you have to do is drag and drop them. It’s a great new feature. Oh and if you click the horizontal bar to the right of the time and date, it will minimize all the windows and show you your desktop.

Explorer - The new explorer is flippin’ sweet. It’s clean and easy to use. Also it doesn’t have an awkward green bar, which Vista had. By default when you open explorer, it will open to your libraries. Which is a new feature in Windows 7 (which I don’t particularly use). Basically any library you create is a virtual folder which combines any folders you specify. All of my media, etc is on my external HD so I have no use for it. If you don’t like the feature, here’s a quick tip on how to make explorer open My Computer by default instead of the library view. There is a way to disable it completely, which can be found here.

Few tips:

Windows Key + E will open My Computer. By default the explorer will open to the new Libraries window. I found a quick tip to disable that here.
There is a HomeGroup section which shows up in explorer. I haven’t done much digging about it, but being the only Windows 7 computer in my network, I hid it. Tip on how to here.

So that’s just a quick glance at some of the new obvious features. There are other new things worth mentioning. Perhaps in another post!
